I am alive, though you would not know it from the blog! The holiday season swallowed me up and I am slowly emerging on the other side. The winter wonderland that we have had has led to some hibernation too. I am working on some new things for the site and for the look of Holdlifestill Photography. I’m also looking forward to spring! In the meantime, I have been working on a personal project of taking a photo a day for 2011. It’s my second year of taking a photo a day, with the first being 2009. I have learned that planning and taking a photo a day shows you the richness of your fleeting life. My 2011 photos can be found on Flickr here.

I wanted to share with you a bit of an e-mail that I received from my father today. He finished the message by simply noting: “love and be loved.” How powerful is that? As I thought about it, it came to me that at the end of a hurried day, if you know that you love and are loved, what else matters?

I hope you have had a wonderful v-day, whatever it means to you and whomever you share it with. As for me, the plan is to weave the “love and be loved” message into my year, starting today. Coming home to these fragrant bits of spring also soothed my soul.

I wanted to share this post with you because of the things that I learned while I made this image. In my photography journey, I get to see people during some of their happiest moments in their lives. I get to witness love and tears of joy. Families welcome me and we develop trust quickly into the session. I learn so much about a family as we talk, laugh, and take photos. Before I know it, our time together comes to an end, with the time slipping by quickly as we move from one area to another and take pictures along the way.

Every time I photograph, I learn something new. Often it’s about the technical or the artistic sides of photography, but sometimes it’s also about ME. These images helped me to learn about patience and the beauty of a second take. You see, I was invited to photograph the newest addition to Adrienne and Mike’s family earlier this summer. There were many ideas for photos swirling in my head. However; we followed the baby’s lead to end the session when it became clear that it was not the best day for them. As I reflected on the session and the flow of the day, I appreciated how much I learned about listening to baby cues. Turned out that the little one was not feeling well. Photos can be taken on another day, and that is exactly what we did. During the second session, we enjoyed a visit and got some lovely individual shots. I learned that even though photography captures a particular moment in time, it’s sometimes best to step back and reschedule for another day.

Musing about my personal photography inspiration: Dorothea Lange on the anniversary of her birth

A quick post to let you know I’m still here! Life flies by with the speed of light and there are many wonderful things on the horizon….wedding couples, babies, and families all waiting to be photographed. Today holds a special spot in my heart as it is the anniversary of the birth of the iconic photographer and my personal inspiration: Dorothea Lange. The starkness of her black and white photos captured during the Depression have had a hold on me since I first saw them.

Dorothea was quoted as saying: “photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.” Incorporating the meaning of that quote into my business name felt like a natural extension of being inspired by Dorothea’s work. I would love to hear who inspires you in your passion….

I don’t know about you, but the months of November and December of ’09 went by in a blur for me. The excitement of working at the H1N1 immunization clinics was followed quickly by getting ready for Christmas, and life felt a little bit like being on a treadmill where someone set the speed just a tad too fast to keep up with.

In January, I found myself taking stock of where I wanted to be headed in 2010 (after all it is a new decade!) and a look back at how my photographs have changed over the last while. One of the things that I’ve struggled with is being critical of my own work and in turn sometimes losing sight of how much fun it is to go out and shoot. So, one of the goals for the year is to have more opportunities to take photos for the pure joy of it, without expectations or limitations.

I wanted to share my first “Sunday drive” shoots from last week. I not only got to make a new friend who shares the same love of abandoned places and entropy, but we came upon this gem where we spent two-and-a-half hours of pure enjoyment of photography.

Here are a few shots from the day:

I felt recharged and renewed in my love of photography after the day. My fingers and toes, on the other hand – they were screaming for a hot chocolate and a warm indoor spell!

It takes me time to digest things. I was thinking about my experience at the Because Kids Grow sale yesterday and I keep coming back to one comment that many people made to me. It was something to the effect of “I wish we had pictures taken when…” It reminded me of the poem “Babies Don’t Keep.” So many people said to me that they thought about having family photos done and did not have time or it always got pushed to the back burner. I too wish there were more images of my family as the kids were younger. I understand the pressures of home, work, and life. I am so happy, though, to help other families stop for a few minutes, enjoy each other, and create some memories for tomorrow.
